What exactly is a Holistic Health & Wellness Coach?

Let’s start by talking about what holistic health and wellness coaching is – I am going to break this down into pieces.

To begin, Holistic means to look at things from the Whole Body perspective.

In Western Medicine, your body is looked at piece by piece, each body part is separated by specialties. It is rare for doctors to connect and work together as a team.

One of the goals as Health Coaches is to fill the gap in healthcare. Physicians do not have the time or the education to spend on fitness, diet, and nutrition. Merriam-Webster’s Medical dictionary defines Holistic as “characterized by the treatment of the whole person, taking into account mental and social factors, rather than just the physical symptoms of a disease.”

In other words, to look at things from a holistic perspective is to look at the entirety of the body; Mind, Body, and Spirit.

In today’s world, with the internet, what to follow can get confusing. There are so many fad diets and fitness trends that often steer you in the wrong direction. Additionally, there are companies out there that call themselves Health Coaches that have zero credentials to call themselves coaches. Always be aware that the information out there on the internet can sometimes lead you in the wrong direction.

Remember, not everything you read on the internet is true. Make sure you are referring to reliable sources and always interview your coach and ask them about their background and makes sure they have the proper qualifications to back what they are teaching you.

How can Holistic Health and Wellness Coaching help me?

We have come to a point in healthcare, where things are starting to shift. As preventable diseases such as diabetes and heart disease continue to rise, the need for preventative healthcare keeps becoming more and more clear. We have to assess our current lifestyles and learn from mistakes. In my case, I learned from my grandfather’s cancers and my grandmother’s dementia, diabetes, and COPD. I learned that I didn’t want to go down that road and the importance of quality of life. Our decisions now shape our future health.

Holistic Health and Wellness Coaching can help in many ways and different coaches have different things they can offer. To list a few:

  • Disease Management & Prevention

  • Stress Management & Prevention

  • Complementary & Integrative Medicine

  • Exercise & Fitness

  • Diet & Nutrition Planning & Management

  • Self-Care

  • Weight Management

  • Smart Grocery Shopping

  • Spirituality

  • Sleep

  • Meditation

  • More than anything Holistic Health and Wellness is someone there who teaches you, holds you accountable, and encourages you along your Health & Wellness journey to a better you!

Generally looking at Disease Management & Prevention, the goal is to first prevent disease. However, say you have been diagnosed with Diabetes, Heart Disease, or Cancer. Our goal as a Holistic Health & Wellness coach is to work with you to achieve the best quality of life and potentially slow down the disease by lowering the risk factors that may have brought it on.
